Youth Homes is preparing for the back-to-school season for kids living in its group homes and is asking community members to help these kids feel their best by donating gift cards to local businesses.
“Just like any kid heading back to school, the kids we serve want to feel their best,” said Amy Schaer, Executive Director. “Missoula is an incredibly generous place, and we are asking our community to donate gift cards to the same places you take your kids to go back to school shopping. Our kids need to have a similar experience of picking out clothes and shoes they like that speak to their personality.”
Youth Homes is a nonprofit organization caring for children who are facing abuse, neglect, emotional trauma, and substance use problems. Through emergency shelters, therapeutic group homes, foster care and adoption programs, and counseling services, they provide a safe refuge for kids while they begin the difficult healing process. Since 1971, they have cared for more than 20,000 children and their families in Western Montana. In Missoula, they operate four group homes that provide round-the-clock care for kids in need.
“Getting back into the school year is important for kids who live in group homes,” said Schaer. “Of course, education is important, but for our kids, the social aspect is just as critical. Over the summer, they’ve missed their friends and the routine of school. This time of year is exciting for reconnecting and getting back into their favorite activities.”
